Studies reveal that a significant number of drop outs from Government Schools in India are due to a lack of basic infrastructure. Many state-run schools do not have the resources to provide for children’s basic needs. An absence of WASH (water sanitation and hygiene) facilities can discourage children and parents from attending school and greatly influence drop-out rates. Poor sanitation facilities are a source of struggle and discomfort for the children, particularly girls. WASH facilities not only have a positive impact on education, but also contribute to student’s health and well-being, inculcating healthy habits that can limit the spread of diseases.
According to the last census, 71% of all children in India attend school. However, this number changes when we look at different sections of the population. Out of children of school going age (5-19) who are differently abled, only 61% attend school. 1.7 million of the 6.4 million differently abled children have never attended school. This project aims to change these unfortunate numbers. We are bringing accessible WASH facilities to 304 children across 26 government schools in Telangana state. By installing handicap toilets in government schools in Telangana, we hope to make school and learning accessible to more children who deserve to have an equal chance to learn in a comfortable and safe, like their peers.
1 School costs 2,00,000 INR/ 2750 USD including plumbing, infrastructure, and fitting. This year end, give the gift of equal access to learning.
