School development has been one of the most debatable topics in India. Over the decades, government institutions and other private and non-governmental agencies have experimented a myriad of ideas to improve the infrastructure and governance system of the schools. Some of the initiatives have been considerably successful yet most never reached a logical conclusion. Under the EQUIP program, United Way of Hyderabad (UWH) has been equipping the schools by creating an environment that is conducive and student-friendly. The program focuses on capacitating the community in the form of community-based institutions viz. School Management Committees (SMC), Primary Health Centers (PHC), Self Help Groups (SHG), Anganwadis, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) etc. to play a greater role in strengthening the school governance system. Over the course of time, EQUIP has resulted in a high level of improvement in attendance and retention rates in the schools. As a whole, the program has improved the overall school experience for children.
